Houses 1, 4, 5 6 Were Small Two
family Dwellings that were Built Close to the Coal Mines of that Area....These
Homes were Built in 1902 in the Bridgeport Area Known at the Bridgeport Rows.
between # 1A Mine, and #1B Mine. There were more of these Little Homes Erected
in the Caledonia Area # 4 Mine. There were two Bedrooms in these Small Temporary
Coal Miners Homes, and There were Families of ten and Twelve Raised in these
Small Dwellings. one Hundred and Six Years Later, there is Still some Miners
families Living in these Temporary Quarters................
Pictures 2 and 3 Show the Larger Company
Homes as they were Called. They were Cut in Half. When one end was
destroyed by Fire, they would Seal off that end, so that the Other Family
would not lose their Home also.
These Houses were Built all Through the Coal
Fields of Cape Breton, Glace Bay, New Waterford, Sydney mines, Florence,
Inverness, Many from all walks of Life were born and Raised, in these
Company Houses, Clergy, Lawyers, Members of Parliament, Premier of Nova
Scotia one Time, was Born, and Raised in a Company House.
